Celebrating 5 Years of the Operator Skills Hub Driving UK Construction Skills Forward

8 April 2026

Flannery is celebrating five years of the Operator Skills Hub (OSH), a pioneering training facility transforming plant operator training and helping tackle the UK’s construction skills shortage created in partnership with Balfour Beatty.

Since launching in 2021, the Hub has rapidly expanded, delivering digitally focused training designed to equip operators with the skills needed for modern, technology-driven sites. With over 2,500 learners trained and an industry leading job conversion rate, the OSH is creating real pathways into employment and strengthening the industry workforce.

This impact comes at a crucial time. The UK construction sector is facing a major workforce challenge, with over 239,000 additional workers needed by 2029 to meet demand. By providing hands-on training, accredited qualifications and access to the latest machine control technologies, the Operator Skills Hub is playing a vital role in closing the skills gap and futureproofing the workforce.

As Flannery marks this five-year milestone, the Operator Skills Hub stands as a clear example of how investment in skills, innovation and people can drive long-term change across the construction industry.

Patrick Flannery, Managing Director:

The big part of the achievement is dealing with a potential skills shortage to the point we never had a skills shortage.

Beyond training numbers, the Operator Skills Hub is helping to diversify and strengthen the workforce, opening doors for young people, career changers and underrepresented groups, while supporting existing operators to upskill and adapt to new technologies

More than training, the Operator Skills Hub is opening doors, building careers and delivering real outcomes, creating opportunities for people and lasting value for the industry.
