Cutting carbon across everyday operations
Flannery is committed to driving sustainable innovation across the plant industry. We champion new technologies, hold ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 accreditations, and are proud to be the UK’s first operated plant hire company to achieve PAS 2080:2023, showcasing leadership in whole‑life carbon management, transparency, and supply chain collaboration.
Electric Plant
Flannery is leading the shift from fossil fuels to electric construction equipment with full‑package solutions that deliver the same powerful performance with greater efficiency, all without the emissions. Our electric plant offers quieter, smoother and zero‑emission operation, supported by the UK’s largest low‑carbon machinery fleet.
Our electric fleet includes UK industry firsts, such as the Fendt E107 fully electric tractor and the LiuGong 922FE, the first 22‑tonne battery‑electric excavator to operate on live construction sites. These innovations help contractors reduce carbon, lower noise levels, and meet sustainability targets without compromising productivity.
Hybrid Plant
Flannery is home to Europe’s largest hybrid excavator fleet, featuring advanced 22‑tonne and 36‑tonne Komatsu hybrid excavators alongside the CAT D6XE electric‑drive dozer. These hybrid low‑carbon machines deliver high performance with significantly reduced fuel consumption and emissions, helping contractors meet sustainability and efficiency targets across every project.
As part of the Element 1 diesel‑reduction project, Flannery has converted two CAT 320 (20‑tonne) excavators to operate on a diesel–hydrogen dual‑fuel blend. Early trial results show up to a 14% reduction in diesel/HVO usage, alongside meaningful cuts in CO₂ emissions. This innovative hydrogen trial is a DESNZ‑funded programme led by BAM, aimed at accelerating cleaner, more sustainable construction equipment solutions.
Hydrogen Plant
Flannery is driving the adoption of hydrogen‑powered construction plant, turning sustainability ambition into real‑world action. We’re championing the next wave of low‑carbon fuels and paving the way for next‑generation hydrogen technology across UK construction. By working closely with industry leaders such as JCB, we’re accelerating the shift to cleaner, high‑performance machinery.
We are proud to lead the sector by deploying the first hydrogen‑combustion engine backhoe loader to a live construction site, delivered in partnership with JCB. This milestone demonstrates what’s possible when manufacturers, contractors and plant specialists work together to bring practical, scalable, zero‑carbon solutions to market.

Eco-Operator Training
Flannery has developed NOCN‑accredited environmental training in the form of Eco-Operator Training to help the construction industry reduce its carbon footprint by cutting fuel use, lowering CO₂ emissions and improving onsite efficiency. Real‑world results show the impact, idling reduced from 42% to just 16%, supporting cleaner, more efficient plant operation across projects.
To make training even more accessible, a new e‑learning module will launch soon, enabling operators to complete environmental training anytime, anywhere and reinforcing best practice across the workforce.
Telematics & Data
Telematics and data intelligence power everything we do at Flannery, enabling smarter, faster and more efficient decision‑making across every project. Every asset in our fleet is equipped with advanced telematics, delivering real‑time insights on utilisation, location, fuel burn and machine health.
Through our partnership with Hiboo, we’ve upgraded to a single, intuitive platform that brings together data from thousands of mixed‑fleet machines in seconds, creating a more connected, customer‑focused experience.
This integration allows us to track idle time, cut waste, improve utilisation and support low‑carbon, fuel‑efficient operation across sites, while intelligent diagnostics help prevent breakdowns before they happen.
Our latest advancement includes an industry‑first telematics solution for electric plant and charging, giving customers visibility of battery levels, charging status and energy use to help optimise electric equipment on site.
